    Servitization: Synthesis and Direction Forward

    This literature review makes an attempt to synthesize existing research on servitization and integrated solutions. Using an exhaustive and systematic methodology, a total of 152 articles are identified as relevant and of high impact in the field. An integrative framework of servitization is developed and the antecedents, processual elements, outcomes, and the linkages between them are identified and discussed. The results show that servitization is complex and that it is contingent on a multitude of different elements. These range from industry-related and customer-related factors, to organizational configuration, product elements, service culture, employee characteristics and several others. The article finds however, that the literature on servitization is often shallow in nature and that research needs to take steps in the right direction in order to deepen our understanding of the process by focusing on more specific research questions and by applying different methodologies and theories. Both general research considerations as well as specific suggestions for research are proposed here.     Structuring servitization-related research

    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to organize and connect past research from different servitization-related scholarly communities. Design/methodology/approach - This study reviews more than 1,000 articles by combining author co-citation and qualitative content analyses. Findings - The structure and boundaries of the field are mapped, and the characteristics of the three identified servitization-related communities are assessed qualitatively. These three communities are product-service systems, solution business, and service science. The findings demonstrate that a narrow range of theories and qualitative methods dominate in existing research. Originality/value - Through the lens of the sociology of science, this review critically evaluates servitization-related research and offers a list of themes that are considered important to the future development of the field. Regarding future research, the main recommendations are as follows: increasing the use of well-established theories from adjacent mature fields, borrowing ideas from different research communities to stimulate knowledge accumulation within and across communities, and reducing the level of description while increasing the number of confirmatory, quantitative, and longitudinal research designs. Finally, the development of formal structures for socialization (e.g. conferences and special issues) could allow the field to achieve a greater degree of scientific maturity and would influence the direction and pace of the development of servitization-related research.fi=vertaisarvioitu|en=peerReviewed

    Hypoxanthine production by ischemic heart demonstrated by high pressure liquid chromatography of blood purine nucleosides and oxypurines

    An isocratic high pressure liquid chromatographic system was developed for the estimation of purine nucleosides and oxypurines in blood. Use was made of a reversed-phase column. Nucleotides derived from erythrocytes affected the separation; these compounds were removed with A12O3. The recovery of the whole clean-up procedure exceeded 75%, and the lower detection limit of the assay for blood metabolites was 0.1 mumol/l. In 6 healthy volunteers, non-resting, the following blood concentrations (mean values +/- S.D. in mumol/l) were observed: adenosine (less than 0.1), inosine (0.2 +/- 0.1), hypoxanthine (2.2 +/- 1.3) and xanthine (0.2 +/- 0.1). In plasma and serum the total amount of these compounds was 1.9 and 5.4 times higher, respectively, presumably due to nucleotide breakdown during blood processing. The myocardial arterial-venous differences of blood purine nucleosides, oxypurines and lactate were subsequently measured in blood samples from 13 patients with angiographically documented ischemic heart disease, undergoing an atrial pacing stress test.     Carbon induced extreme ultraviolet (EUV) reflectance loss characterized using visible-light ellipsometry

    Carbon deposition on extreme ultraviolet (EUV) optics was observed due to photon-induced dissociation of hydrocarbons in a EUV lithography environment. The reflectance loss of the multilayer mirror is determined by the carbon layer thickness and density. To study the influence of various forms of carbon, EUV-induced carbon, hot filament and e-beam evaporated carbon were deposited on EUV multilayer mirrors. Spectroscopic ellipsometry was used to determine the carbon layer thickness and the optical constants ranging from ultraviolet to near infrared. The carbon density (and thus reflectance loss) was determined from the optical constants using both Bruggeman's effective medium approximation and the Clausius–Mosotti equation. Both approaches result in a similar EUV reflectance loss, with an accuracy of about 4%. The application of this process to ultrathin carbon films is further discussed

    Myocardial release of hypoxanthine and lactate during percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty

    The response of myocardial lactate and hypoxanthine metabolism during percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty was studied in a series of 15 patients undergoing this procedure. A minimum of 4 balloon inflations was performed per patient with an average duration per occlusion of 49 +/- 11 seconds (mean +/- standard deviation) for a total occlusion time of 192 +/- 40 seconds. Thermodilution coronary venous blood flow measured in the great cardiac vein decreased from control values of 72 +/- 4 ml/min (mean +/- standard error of the mean) to 47 +/- 10 ml/min with the fourth coronary occlusion (p less than 0.005). Arteriovenous lactate and hypoxanthine showed peak differences during the reactive hyperemia after the first 2 occlusions which did not increase after subsequent occlusions. Within minutes after the procedure, lactate and hypoxanthine efflux was no longer seen, demonstrating the reversibility of the metabolic disturbances after repeated ischemia.     Heterogeneous antimicrobial activity in broncho-alveolar aspirates from mechanically ventilated intensive care unit patients

    Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs, where the alveoli in the affected area are filled with pus and fluid. Although ventilated patients are at risk, not all ventilated patients develop pneumonia. This suggests that the sputum environment may possess antimicrobial activities. Despite the generally acknowledged importance of antimicrobial activity in protecting the human lung against infections, this has not been systematically assessed to date. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to measure antimicrobial activity in broncho-alveolar aspirate ('sputum") samples from patients in an intensive care unit (ICU) and to correlate the detected antimicrobial activity with antibiotic levels, the sputum microbiome, and the respective patients' characteristics. To this end, clinical metadata and sputum were collected from 53 mechanically ventilated ICU patients. The antimicrobial activity of sputum samples was tested against Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus anginosus. Here we show that sputa collected from different patients presented a high degree of variation in antimicrobial activity, which can be partially attributed to antibiotic therapy. The sputum microbiome, although potentially capable of producing antimicrobial agents, seemed to contribute in a minor way, if any, to the antimicrobial activity of sputum. Remarkably, despite its potentially protective effect, the level of antimicrobial activity in the investigated sputa correlated inversely with patient outcome, most likely because disease severity outweighed the beneficial antimicrobial activities.</p

    Design of a randomised controlled trial on immune effects of acidic and neutral oligosaccharides in the nutrition of preterm infants: carrot study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Prevention of serious infections in preterm infants is a challenge, since prematurity and low birth weight often requires many interventions and high utility of devices. Furthermore, the possibility to administer enteral nutrition is limited due to immaturity of the gastrointestinal tract in the presence of a developing immune system. In combination with delayed intestinal bacterial colonisation compared with term infants, this may increase the risk for serious infections. Acidic and neutral oligosaccharides play an important role in the development of the immune system, intestinal bacterial colonisation and functional integrity of the gut. This trial aims to determine the effect of enteral supplementation of acidic and neutral oligosaccharides on infectious morbidity (primary outcome), immune response to immunizations, feeding tolerance and short-term and long-term outcome in preterm infants. In addition, an attempt is made to elucidate the role of acidic and neutral oligosaccharides in postnatal modulation of the immune response and postnatal adaptation of the gut.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>In a double-blind placebo controlled randomised trial, 120 preterm infants (gestational age <32 weeks and/or birth weight <1500 gram) are randomly allocated to receive enteral acidic and neutral oligosaccharides supplementation (20%/80%) or placebo supplementation (maltodextrin) between day 3 and 30 of life. Primary outcome is infectious morbidity (defined as the incidence of serious infections). The role of acidic and neutral oligosaccharides in modulation of the immune response is investigated by determining the immune response to DTaP-IPV-Hib(-HBV)+PCV7 immunizations, plasma cytokine concentrations, faecal Calprotectin and IL-8. The effect of enteral acidic and neutral oligosaccharides supplementation on postnatal adaptation of the gut is investigated by measuring feeding tolerance, intestinal permeability, intestinal viscosity, and determining intestinal microflora. Furthermore, short-term and long-term outcome are evaluated.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Especially preterm infants, who are at increased risk for serious infections, may benefit from supplementation of prebiotics. Most studies with prebiotics only focus on the colonisation of the intestinal microflora. However, the pathways how prebiotics may influence the immune system are not yet fully understood. Studying the immune modulatory effects is complex because of the multicausal risk of infections in preterm infants. The combination of neutral oligosaccharides with acidic oligosaccharides may have an increased beneficial effect on the immune system. Increased insight in the effects of prebiotics on the developing immune system may help to decrease the (infectious) morbidity and mortality in preterm infants.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>Current Controlled Trials ISRCTN16211826.</p
